Environment & Safety

Worker Safety

Our safety culture is demonstrated through dedicated employees who provide the best assurance of world-class practices, which safeguard our people and our surroundings.

All AREVA Resources employees wear radiation monitoring devices while at McClean Lake. The results of this monitoring are provided to regulators, and show that employees' radiation intake is well below allowable limits.

Tailings Management

Tailings are waste products results from milling uranium ore. McClean Lake's JEB Tailings Management Facility (TMF) serves as the repository for all resulting tailings. The facility allows proper waste management that minimizes potential adverse environmental impacts.

Monitoring

AREVA's extensive monitoring programs include regular sampling of air, water, land, plants, and animals. Monitoring is ongoing beginning with exploration, and continuing through to decommissioning.

Decommissioning

AREVA Resources is a trend setter in mine decommissioning. AREVA's Cluff Lake mine in northern Saskatchewan has been decommissioned and is now under constant monitoring; it is a global example of how the original environment can be restored.

It is no different at McClean Lake. Once reserves are consumed, the open pits at McClean Lake will be decommissioned.
